Carol AylwardProfessor Carol Aylward is an Associate Professor at Dalhousie Law School, where she teaches Criminal Law and General Jurisprudence. She is the longest serving Director of the Indigenous Black and Mi’kmaq Initiative of the Dalhousie Law School, a position she held for 10 years. Originally from Cape Breton, Professor Aylward completed both her Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B.) and her Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) at Dalhousie University. She was the first black Nova Scotian to graduate with Masters of Law degree from Dalhousie University.

Professor Aylward has provided leadership and made significant contributions to her community over the years. Serving at various times on the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and the Nova Scotia Police Commission; the first black woman to do so. She is also a past president of the Nova Scotia Black Lawyers Association and the Canadian Access to Legal Education Group.

As an academic, Professor Aylward’s research interests include Critical Race Theory, Criminal Law and Human Rights. Since 1995 she has written and published several articles. In 1999 she published the only book on critical race theory in Canada, "Canadian Critical Race Theory: Racism and the Law", Fernwood Publishing. She is currently writing a book titled "The Mississippi of the North": Growing up in Black Nova Scotia, which is a book on applied Critical Race Theory, Employment Law and Human Rights Law.

Professor Aylward has two grown up children and two grandchildren.
